The center channel shares the same driver attributes except it is magnetically shielded, so it won’t interfere with your TV picture. The left and right speakers sound best when the tweeters are pointed directly at the main listening position, and with the speakers not spaced too far apart from each other . Also, when using satellite speakers this small, it's important to place the subwoofer within 4 or 5 feet any of the three front speakers to ensure the best possible sound. The satellites are just 6 inches tall, 3.6 inches wide, and 3.85 inches deep.

The HD Theater 500 is a compact, high-definition 5.1 home theater system that’s simple to set up and use. If you're putting together a home theater on a budget, the first options that probably come to mind are sound bars and home-theater-in-a-box systems, but that's too bad. Sure, the Klipsch HD Theater 500 has more pesky speakers to deal with, but their compact size and tasteful finish really won't tarnish your living room decor. It’s impossible to look at a spec sheet and predict how a product will sound. Even past experience with the manufacturer’s previous product lines is not necessarily a guide.

CD sound was less convincing with the HD Theater 500, especially when we played CDs in stereo. The satellites' small size was more evident, so we mostly listened to CDs in Dolby Pro Logic II surround, which filled out the sound a little. The high-resolution surround mix on R.E.M.'s "Green" DVD-A album never really jelled on the HD Theater 500.

The enclosure type for these Klipsch speakers is a closed system with the subwoofer featuring a bass-reflex via a rear-firing port enclosure. Driver components for the speakers are a 0.75-inch, aluminum dome tweeter and a 2.5-inch, IMG mid-bass driver. Frequency response for the Klipsch HD500 is between 36 Hz and 20 kHz for the entire system. The satellites have a response from 150 Hz to 20 kHz with the subwoofer having a frequency response between 36 Hz and 200 Hz.
When I saw a 0.75-inch aluminum tweeter recessed into a horn, I expected a bright, tight, and intense sound. What I got was intense some of the time, tight all the time, and not overly bright. Voicing was on the mellow side, but the overall effect was far from wishy-washy.
The Sub 8 has a bottom-mounted 8-inch driver with a large 3-inch port in the back. Rounded edges at the sides prevent the black matte vinyl enclosure from looking too box-like. A pair of RCA-type inputs is the only connectivity option, and most people will probably just connect a line-level cable to one of them. That said, the Energy Take Classic 5.1 was superior on all counts and we don't think its slightly larger speakers would impinge much more on your living room decor. While the HD Theater 500 system certainly puts HTIBs and sound bars to shame, it fares less well compared with other 5.1 speaker systems available for less than $500. The Klipsch HD Theater 500 offers competent sound for a budget 5.1 system, but we like most of its competitors more.
